Stop Replacing Windows for Energy Savings
This is probably my most unpopular opinion.
If you want new windows because you want new windows, that's perfectly fine.
But if you're replacing windows because you think they're going to dramatically lower your electric bill, you're likely going to be disappointed.
One of my customers struggled with indoor humidity for years.
Another contractor told her the solution was replacing her windows.
She spent the money.
Her humidity problem remained exactly the same.
When we evaluated the house, we found air infiltration issues, duct leakage, and an improperly configured zoning system that had been running at high speed since a variable-speed system was installed years earlier.
We sealed the ducts, reduced air infiltration, and corrected the zoning settings.
That evening she texted me to report that her indoor humidity had dropped from 84% to 49%.
She was so relieved that she cried.
Her new windows were beautiful, but they had done nothing to solve the actual problem.
Why Testing Matters
One of the phrases I use constantly is:
