The contractor may not technically be wrong. The refrigerant charge may be correct.
The temperature split may look normal. The outdoor unit may be running. The indoor blower may be moving air.

A Recent Austin Example
Last week, I had a homeowner call because the primary bedroom and primary bathroom were uncomfortable. She thought maybe her AC was too old.
That would be an easy assumption to make. The room is hot, the system has some age on it, and the first thought is, “Maybe I need a new air conditioner.”
But that was not the real issue.
When I inspected the attic, I found a bad plenum design and an undersized duct feeding the bathroom. More specifically, there was a duct coming off the top of a horizontal plenum that was robbing airflow from those rooms.
That is not something a homeowner is going to see from inside the house. It is also not something you are going to diagnose by standing outside at the condenser.
The problem was obvious enough that no major testing was needed. But I also found a vertical attic chase and used an infrared camera to show the customer how that chase was heating the house up like an oven.
The customer thought she had an old AC problem. What she actually had was an airflow, duct design, and attic heat problem.
Should You Replace the AC?
Sometimes replacing the HVAC equipment is the right answer. If the system is failing, severely oversized or undersized, unreliable, or near the end of its life, replacement may make sense.
There are also cases where upgrading to a two-stage system can help with humidity control, especially in a zoned system.
But I would still recommend fixing the underlying issues first.
If the house has duct leakage, poor airflow, bad insulation, or attic air leakage, those issues should not be ignored just because new equipment is being installed.
Home performance and weatherization work can improve many of the same complaints Austin homeowners have: hot rooms, high bills, humidity, dust, and long run times.
If the root cause is in the attic, the attic has to be fixed.
What Austin Homeowners Can Check First
Before calling a contractor, homeowners can check a few simple things.
First, check the filter. Make sure it is not dirty and not rated too high. In most homes, I recommend staying at MERV 8. Higher-MERV filters can restrict airflow if the system was not designed for them.
Second, make sure the return grilles are not blocked by furniture, rugs, or storage. The system cannot deliver air properly if it cannot pull enough air back.
Third, look at the supply grilles in the problem room. Many Austin homes have basic stamped-face grilles that do not move air very well. Changing to a one-way curved blade grille can give you about 15% better airflow at that register.
That will not fix every problem, but it is one of the few simple upgrades a homeowner can make that can actually improve airflow into a room.
